Our Silent Disco in December was a fun, festive and welcoming evening, bringing together 39 young people. It was lovely to see young people from different church youth groups mixing naturally with those from our youth drop-in and school groups, with several arriving alongside friends they had invited.
On arrival, each young person was given a set of headphones with two music channels to choose from. Young people enjoyed dancing, chatting and choosing their favourite songs. Alongside the disco, there was our non-alcoholic cocktail bar, festive nibbles, nativity decorating, games such as Uno and Connect 4, and a “guess the taste” challenge. A Christmas tree decorating game created a real moment of togetherness, and the chance for young people to DJ against the youth leaders was a highlight for many.
A meaningful moment came when Nathan shared some of his own story and spoke about how Jesus has helped him in his life. The young people were able to listen using the silent disco headphones, meaning everyone could hear clearly and engage in their own way. Young people were invited to respond by choosing which channel to listen to – whether they simply wanted to pause and ask if God might be real, or felt they were already on a journey of faith and wanted to explore further.
The evening was supported by our wonderful volunteers and youth leaders, working alongside staff to create a space that demonstrated God’s love, shared the Christian story, and gently gave young people the freedom to respond, all while having plenty of fun along the way.
